A Hull Identification Number (HIN) is a vessel identifier assigned by its manufacturer. Format and accepted registration numbers vary by vessel and jurisdiction.
A U.S.-standard recreational-vessel HIN has 12 characters. An example is illustrative only; it is not checked against a registry.

A U.S.-standard HIN is a 12-character identifier on recreational vessels. It is a format check only—not a live Coast Guard search or confirmation of vessel history.
The HIN is commonly affixed to the starboard outboard side of the transom. Look for a permanently marked sequence of letters and numbers.
Match the characters against the vessel registration, title, or builder paperwork. If you cannot find a HIN, use an official vessel registration number where supported.
Choose the vessel’s registration jurisdiction in the request form. For a non-U.S. vessel, select the official registration or vessel-number identifier rather than applying the U.S. HIN pattern.
Examples such as ABC12345C090 are illustrative only and do not identify a real vessel.
