IDENTIFIER GUIDE

Aircraft registration and serial numbers

An aircraft registration or tail number is assigned under a national system. A manufacturer serial number is a separate identifier and has no universal format.

U.S. civil aircraft use FAA-assigned N-numbers; other countries use their own registration marks.

How to Find Your Aircraft Registration Number

Use the registration marks shown on the aircraft or its documents. If you have a manufacturer serial number instead, select that separate identifier type in the request form.

01

Look at the exterior marks

For U.S. fixed-wing aircraft, check the sides of the fuselage or the vertical tail. Marking locations can vary with aircraft type.

02

Check the aircraft documents

Compare the registration certificate and aircraft records. The manufacturer serial number is different from the registration number and may appear on the identification plate.

03

Choose the correct identifier

Select the registration jurisdiction and either registration/tail number or manufacturer serial number. The form checks format only; it does not contact a registry.
